La Bellezza Mentale – Julia Downie

La Bellezza Mentale – Julia Downie
March 19 – 23, 2018

Opening reception: March 23, 8pm-10 pm

This show is a personal exploration of my mental health and illness, in which I reflect on some of the things I encounter in my everyday life. This show is not to make assumptions about mental health or mental illness in accordance to other people.

La Bellezza Mentale is a self-expression shown through manipulated photographs and paintings. Through topics of anxiety, depression, vulnerability, panic attack and more, I was able to apply these feelings and topics into my artwork.  My process involves the human body, the human body is important to my artwork because it is the displayer of all my feelings, emotions, and encounters.  By using painting and choice of thematic colours, I make a connection to a certain feeling or emotion. Intricate responses to colour theory and emotional response allowed me to configure the manipulated photos, in hope to highlight the emotion behind the colours chosen.  These works are an accumulation of my individual experiences and displays of emotional outlets that I want to address or respond to in using forms and abstraction. I use abstracted forms as to not leave the body, forms, or props that I had use as too literal. These are an abstract-expressionistic reflection on me, my process and the intimacy behind the personal topic. This is due to the fact that I do not show my own mental illnesses to everyone, therefore I did not want to display it as such.
